Shocking LIES About Amazon KDP
As someone who’s been self-publishing for over 4 years, I’ve heard a variety of lies about Amazon KDP.
These lies can mislead new authors and direct them down the wrong path.
Unfortunately, many people in this business spread these lies about low and medium content books only for selfish gain.
It took me a while to figure out the truth from fiction but here are 5 of the most common lies I’ve faced self-publishing with Amazon KDP.
1. The More Books, The Better
Some people believe that to be successful on KDP, you need to publish thousands of books.
While having more books can increase your chances, it's not the only way.
I spent time and years publishing low-quality books thinking I was on the right path but it only ended up wasting time.
I have over 1,000 books, but only about 260 ish are live, and roughly 10 of those sell daily.
This shows that quality is more important than quantity.
Focus on creating high-quality books that you have a lot of knowledge in and make sure you validate the demand to ensure that your book will sell.

2. You Can’t Make Money Without Spending Big On Ads
Many think that spending a lot on ads is the only way to make money with KDP.
While ads can help, they are not magic.
Ads won't sell a poorly made-book.
Instead, spend time researching your topic, making a great cover, and using the right keywords.
There are also low-budget ways to promote your book, such as lottery ads, social media, especially TikTok or Instagram or even using this platform, Substack to build an audience.
3. AI-Generated Content Will Get You Banned
Some people fear using AI to help create their books will get them banned from Amazon.
This ain’t true.
Amazon cares about the quality and originality of the content.
They introduced a policy that requires authors to disclose if they used AI in their books. You can read through Amazon’s policies here.
I’ve used tools like Midjourney to create coloring books and ChatGPT is great for research, titles, descriptions, and keywords.
4. You Need To Invest In The Best Tools To Succeed
While having the best tools can help, they are not necessary for success.
Some buy every tool yet still struggle to get sales.
Many free tools and resources can get you very far. For example:
DS Amazon Quickview: This tool saves time by providing important book data such as BSR, without looking through each book individually.
Amazon Search Bar: Use this to find suggestions that customers are searching for.
Canva: A free tool to create covers and interiors.
ChatGPT 3.5: Helps with research, titles, descriptions, and backend keywords.
5. Amazon KDP Is Saturated
Many people think that KDP is too crowded for new authors to succeed.
While competition is high, Amazon is a huge marketplace. New books can still become bestsellers.
Always look for new niches and genres to explore. You will make the most money when you have first movers advantage, not by copying others.
Don’t limit yourself to the US market; there are many other markets where your books can thrive Canada, UK, Australia and more if you speak other languages.
Try different types of books like coloring books, activity books, fact books, short stories, quiz books, and workbooks don’t just stay uploading notebooks and journals.
There are so many types of books that you can create.
Find your unique voice and offer something special.
Final Thoughts
Don’t follow anyone’s advice blindly.
I was only able to find out the truth through trying and testing.
This will provide you a solid foundation to start with but be prepared to put in the work.
I hope my responses allow you to approach low and medium content books from a more informed mindset.
